LD1 Democrats May Meeting
Time & Location
About the Event
Join the LD1 Democrats monthly meeting to discuss the current state of education in AZ with Superintendent of Public Education Kathy Hoffman & Cave Creek board member Jeff Fortney.
Superintendent Kathy Hoffman, a former speech pathologist, has been the face of Arizona education since 2019. Her trajectory into politics has been remarkable. With no political experience, she was inspired to run after watching the confirmation of Betsy DeVos, former U.S. Secretary of Education. Starting from nothing and running a clean election, she managed to defeat both her primary and Republican opponents. Since her election, she has presided over a contentious period in public education, both because of the pandemic and retrogressive policy making at the State legislature. Despite the challenges, her commitment to shoring up Arizona’s public education system at a time of threatened resources has won her many plaudits. She will describe the challenges unique to Arizona and share her vision for the future.
Jeff Fortney brings 20 years’ experience as an educator and public education advocate to his role as one of the newest members of the CCUSD School Board. He will discuss what his role entails, his vision for the future of education, and why there often is such a disconnect between the community and the school board. He will address the value a stellar public school system brings to the community and why it is so important to ensure its adequate funding.
